Why Women's ADHD Is Different

For decades, ADHD research focused almost entirely on hyperactive boys. The result? Millions of women went undiagnosed, often being told they were “just anxious” or “not trying hard enough.” According to research by Hinshaw et al. (2022), women are diagnosed with ADHD at roughly half the rate of men, despite similar prevalence.

Women with ADHD are more likely to mask their symptoms, leading to burnout, low self-esteem, and exhaustion. Hormonal changes during the menstrual cycle, perimenopause, and menopause can make symptoms significantly worse.

Frequently Asked Questions

Common questions about ADHD coaching for women.

Why do women need specialist ADHD coaching?

Women with ADHD often present differently to men. They are more likely to have the inattentive type, which is frequently missed or misdiagnosed as anxiety or depression. Women also deal with unique challenges like hormonal fluctuations affecting symptoms, years of masking, and higher rates of burnout. My coaching takes all of this into account.

I was only diagnosed with ADHD in my 30s or 40s. Is that normal?

Absolutely. Late diagnosis is incredibly common for women. Research suggests that women are diagnosed on average 5 to 10 years later than men, often after a significant life change like having children, perimenopause, or increased workplace demands. Many of my clients are navigating that post-diagnosis period and finding it both liberating and overwhelming.

How does ADHD interact with hormones and periods?

Oestrogen plays a key role in dopamine regulation, which means ADHD symptoms often fluctuate across the menstrual cycle, during pregnancy, postpartum, and through perimenopause and menopause. Many women notice their medication feels less effective at certain times of the month. I help clients track these patterns and develop strategies that account for hormonal changes.

Do I need a diagnosis to access ADHD coaching for women?

No. You do not need a formal diagnosis. Many of my clients are on NHS waiting lists, going through private assessment, or simply recognise ADHD traits in themselves. My mentoring is open to any woman experiencing executive function challenges, whether diagnosed or not.

How much does ADHD coaching for women cost?
