Free ADHD Support in the UK: Every Resource You Need to Know About
A comprehensive guide to free ADHD support in the UK. From NHS services to charities, benefits, and online resources, here is what is available at no cost.
Support Should Not Depend on Your Bank Balance
One of the most frustrating things about ADHD in the UK is how much of the support landscape is private and paid. Private assessments, private coaching, private therapy. When your condition already makes managing money harder, being told that help costs hundreds of pounds feels cruel.
But here is the thing: there is more free support available than most people realise. It is scattered across different organisations and systems, which makes it hard to find (especially with ADHD executive function challenges). So I have gathered it all in one place.
NHS Services
ADHD Assessment
You are entitled to a free ADHD assessment through the NHS. The waiting lists are long (often 1-3 years depending on your area), but the assessment itself is fully funded.
How to access it:
- Ask your GP for a referral to an adult ADHD assessment service
- You can also use the Right to Choose pathway, which allows you to be referred to a private provider at NHS expense, often with shorter waits
NHS ADHD Medication
If diagnosed, ADHD medication is available on NHS prescription. In England, this costs the standard prescription charge (currently around 9.90 per item) or is free with a prepayment certificate. In Scotland, Wales, and Northern Ireland, prescriptions are free.
IAPT / NHS Talking Therapies
If ADHD co-occurs with anxiety or depression, you can self-refer to NHS Talking Therapies (formerly IAPT) for free therapy, usually CBT. You do not need a GP referral. Search "NHS Talking Therapies" plus your area to find your local service.
Community Mental Health Teams
For more complex needs, your GP can refer you to your local Community Mental Health Team (CMHT), which can provide ongoing support, medication management, and access to psychiatry.
Right to Choose Is Free
The Right to Choose pathway lets your GP refer you to a private ADHD provider at NHS expense. This often significantly reduces waiting times while remaining completely free. Ask your GP about it.
Government Schemes
Access to Work
If you are employed or self-employed, Access to Work can fund ADHD coaching, specialist equipment, and workplace support at no cost to you. The maximum annual award is around 68,000 (2025-26). This is one of the most valuable and underused ADHD resources in the UK.

Personal Independence Payment (PIP)
PIP is a tax-free benefit for people whose health condition affects their daily life. ADHD can qualify. It is not means-tested, so your income does not matter.

Disabled Students Allowance (DSA)
If you are a student, DSA funds mentoring, assistive technology, and study skills support for ADHD. It does not need to be repaid.
Apply through: Student Finance England (or equivalent for Scotland, Wales, NI)
Universal Credit and Employment Support Allowance
If your ADHD affects your ability to work, you may be entitled to additional support through the benefits system. Citizens Advice can help you understand your entitlements.

Explore Mentoring ServicesWhen Free Support Is Not Enough
Free support is valuable but it has limitations: long waiting times, generic approaches, and limited availability. If free support is not meeting your needs and you have the budget, paid options like private ADHD coaching or mentoring can provide more personalised, responsive support.
If budget is a concern, check:
- Whether your workplace will fund ADHD coaching through Access to Work
- Whether your university disability service can provide more support through DSA
- Whether your health insurance (if you have it) covers ADHD services
I offer a range of pricing options and am always happy to discuss what might work within your budget. Book a free discovery call to talk it through.
There is more support available than you think. You just need to know where to find it. And if you want someone to help you navigate all of this, book a free discovery call. The call itself is free too.
